JI WEON RYU, Principal Flute
Admired for her “pure poetry” (NFA Chronicle), Ji Weon Ryu is one of the most versatile flutists of her generation. Appointed Principal Flute of the Albany Symphony in 2017 and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in 2019, she has frequently performed with the New York Philharmonic and other distinguished ensembles in and around New York, including the Chautauqua, Princeton, and Syracuse Symphonies, as well as the Caroga Lake Music Festival Ensemble and the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players.
She has also held Principal Flute positions with the Britt Festival Orchestra and the Seoul Arts Center Festival Orchestra. Her other festival appearances include the Tanglewood Music Center, the Verbier Festival, and BBC Proms Korea.
Since making her solo debut with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 12, Ji Weon has maintained an active career as both a soloist and chamber musician. She is a top prizewinner of the Vienna International Music Competition, the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition, the New York Flute Club Competition, and the Artur Balsam Duo Competition. She has also received the Young Artist Award from the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation in South Korea.
As a founding member of Frisson—an “explosive” New York City-based nonet—she has toured more than 20 U.S. cities annually and has been featured on NPR’s Performance Today. She is also a co-founder of Ensemble Blank, a group that explores new sounds in unconventional venues.
An avid recording artist, Ji Weon has recorded numerous contemporary works with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, including the 66th Grammy Award-winning Live at Orpheum NOLA. Her recent recording of Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun (arranged for octet), released by Delos Productions, has garnered critical acclaim for her “coiling flute,” “seductively spun” interpretation, “gorgeous, buoyant flute,” and “enchanting lyricism.”
In addition to her stage career, Ji Weon is dedicated to teaching. She has served on the flute faculty at Louisiana State University and as a guest clinician at institutions including The Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the National University of Tainan, among others.
Ji Weon holds a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, as well as both a Bachelor of Music and an Accelerated Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School. Her principal teachers include Young Ji Song, Carol Wincenc, and Robert Langevin.
