Greg Spiridopoulos is a prolific and versatile performer as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician. In addition to holding the position of Principal Trombone of the Albany Symphony since 2001, Spiridopoulos is Principal Trombone of the Glimmerglass Opera Festival Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic, and Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as a member of the Empire Brass Quintet. Spiridopoulos has appeared as a soloist with the Albany Symphony, Harvard Summer Pops, The Valley Winds, and other New England ensembles. Before joining the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2010, Spiridopoulos led a distinguished freelance career, with regular appearances with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Orchestras, Boston Ballet Orchestra, Boston Lyric Opera, and the Handel and Haydn Society.
Since his appointment to UMass, Mr. Spiridopoulos has presented numerous solo recitals and master classes including those at Yale University, Eastman School of Music, McGill University, University of North Texas, Texas Tech, Texas Christian University, Oklahoma City University, East Carolina University, Ithaca College, Boston University, and the University of New Hampshire. In 2022, Spiridopoulos released a solo CD, entitled Synchronous, of all new commissioned works written for him and the UMass Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band.
A native of Vienna, Virginia, Spiridopoulos studied with Milton Stevens and Lindsey Smith before studying with Curtis Olson and Philip Sinder at Michigan State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Music. While at MSU, he was a proud member of the Spartan Marching Band. He earned his Master of Music from Boston University, studying with Ronald Barron and Scott Hartman.
